The jungle book 2016
As I explained in my first two instalments of “The Jungle Book 2016”, I wanted to use familiar elements from the original story in a new and different way. As with the classic tale, I wanted to find some sort of balance between the animals and the humans in the story, and make it a mixture of adventure, love, and sometimes dark forces. Here are some interesting facts from my book on that subject:
The book was based on the King James version of the story, which was created in 1697, long before Disney’s animated version of the story in 1967. I wanted to pay tribute to the original source and show how it influenced the Disney version.
By using traditional animals in a way that we haven’t seen before, the action in the book is more realistic and striking. These creatures act like they have lives and feelings, rather than just being props or background characters.
The illustrations were hand-drawn in a unique style, much like the original illustrations in the Disney version, and at the same time it feels like they belong in this new story. I wanted to take everything we know about this classic tale and spin it around in a new and exciting way.
Synopsis
There is an old tale about the Mowgli who was brought up by wolves, who roam the jungles of India. In the original version of this tale, Mowgli was raised by wolves until he was discovered by human beings and taken to a city where he was raised by humans. When Mowgli was a young boy, a trio of brothers — a bear, a wolf, and a panther — became his new caretakers. The brothers had heard a rumor that there was a Mowgli in the jungle, so they went looking for him. When they found him, the three animals questioned him about his life. They asked him if he lived in a house, which is when he told them about the monkeys. When they told Mowgli about the stories they had heard about humans, Mowgli laughed and said he wasn’t human. And so it began….
This is my interpretation of this old classic story. It is essentially a story about the innocence and childhood. The setting is the jungles of India, which gives it an exotic feel, but also we get a feel of realism. We get to see the strange creatures of the jungle, as well as the humans who live there. The animals have their own life and personalities. For example, Bagheera is the leader of the pack of animals and he has very strong morals. Bagheera helps Mowgli by guiding him through the jungle and protecting him from harm. The animals are an ensemble of different species, including the hyenas and monkeys. The jungle is in fact a strange and dangerous place. There is an element of danger for Mowgli, but there is also danger for the animals as well. It is an adventure that follows Mowgli through life. We witness him grow and learn, as he tries to adapt to his new world, yet still struggles to come to terms with who he really is. In the end he must make a decision as to who he wants to be in this strange new place.
